As we have already discussed in previous posts, safety is essential when working with power tools. This incorporates all items of clothing that operators wear, from footwear right through to jewellery. It’s not something that can be ignored and everybody who works in an environment with power tools should have a thorough understanding of what needs to be done. Here are some of our pointers:
- Protect you face. If you’re using tools such as saws and drills where pieces of debris could easily fly off and cause injuries, this is especially important. Many machines will require you to wear a visor or face shield.
- Protect your head. If you’re working in an environment where materials could be dropped or debris could hit you, wear a hard hat to keep your head well protected.
- Wear appropriate footwear. Many industries will require specific types of industrial footwear that are geared up for protecting you in the workplace.
- Don’t wear jewellery. It’s important to be completely familiar with the operating instructions before using any piece of machinery. You may even be required to remove small items of jewellery such as wedding rings.
- Protect your ears. Many power tools will reach a decibel level that can be dangerous for your hearing if you don’t take precautions. Use ear defenders and/ or ear plugs.
